The Vultures Interview
The Vultures are a seven man hip-hop group from San Antonio, Texas. The core members of the group are, Ruler Why, Jus the Destroyer, and Jamar Equality. The Vultures have recently added four new members, Stealth Entity, DJ 7ish, K.I.N., and Blazy. Their first track dropped in 2007 and was titled, Plot The Apocalypse. Since then they have released From Parts Unknown, Desert Eagles Vol. 1, and 7 Rings Of Saturn. K.I.N, or Knowledge Is Now, was a side project, and consisted of MC Ruin, DJ 7ish, Jamar Equality, and Jus the Destroyer. The Vultures are a very talented group of hip-hop artists that deserve to be heard. Their sound is a reminder that real hip-hop is still alive. Their incredible/intelligent lyrics, flow, and their abilities to ride a beat, showcase their talent and hunger for success. I had a chance to interview Ruler Why the main producer of The Vultures. We discussed the history of The Vultures, the future, and everything in between. Definitely check out The Vultures!
Links:
Question 1.) Tell me about the origins of the Vultures. How did The Vultures form? I noticed all you guys are veterans of hip-hop, how did you all come together?
Ruler Why-The Vultures core members are Ruler Why, Jus the Destroyer, and Jamar Equality. We have extended family which consists of Stealth Entity, DJ 7ISH, K.I.N. and Blazy. They are the veterans, we are the young cats, hungry, on the come up.
Question 2.) Being a very talented group, lyrically, and a group with an old-school sound, what are your thoughts on mainstream hip-hop?
Ruler Why-It serves its purpose. Some people like it, what are ya gonna do about it? The industy has changed and shifted away from the old mentality of making money off of records. Now, more than ever, it's about staying in contact with fans, and connecting to people on a much more personal level. With the mainstream the way it is, it makes groups like us sound fresh and exciting. It draws a distinctive line between what IS Hip-Hop and what isn't.
Question 3.) What or who have influenced the Vultures? For example, which artists, and what views spiritually and politically?
Ruler Why-Politics? Nah, we all know that shit is bullshit. spiritually... its all different, we all know we have the power to manifest our destiny. and the range of hip hop groups, producers & rappers ranges so big it would be impossible to list.
Question 4.) Your guys released your first track in 2007 titled, Plot the Apocalypse. How far have you guys come as a group?
Ruler Why-The overall sound, abilites, lyrics, beats have exponentially gotten better. We still stick to the same old guns, but we have polished & modified those old guns for a more deadly, precise shot.
Question 5.) Tell me more about K.I.N., and the experiences you guys had planning, and producing the album, and working with other artists.
Ruler Why-K.I.N. was a side project. It was at a time when I was still learning the ropes of engineering, beat making, recording. Headlining the project was San Antonio MC, RUiN, and heavily featured DJ 7ISH, Jamar Equality, and Jus the Destroyer. I helped materialize a project RUiN & 7ISH had been wanting to do. It was recorded & produced basically the same time as 7 Rings of Saturn. Both of those records have a similar vibe and sound.
Question 6.) When did you personally start in hip-hop? Writing your own songs, beats,etc..
Ruler Why- 2005ish Ruler & Destroyer came up freestyling shittily over beats & recording into cool edit pro. Jus the Destroyer gave birth Ruler Why's hip hop knowledge. Jus knew Equal from school and the first day we all hung out. Plot the Apocalypse was born. we recorded that shit with a usb mic on a shitty laptop with a beat Destroyer made in garage band.
Question 7.) What's the future for The Vultures? Are you guys working on a new album? Collabs?
Ruler Why-The Vultures have actually been on a 1+ year hiatus from recording new material. No doubt there is tons of unreleased shit in the archives. Yes a new EP is just about done, after that.... the world. Shout outs to Psytology, our brother crew from Germany holding it down. We aren't seeking collabs at the time, what we have is all we need. No need to coat tail. Vultures on the flock.
Question 8.) Did most of you have successful solo careers before forming The Vultures?
Ruler Why-Nah, we all young upcoming artists. The plan is get the following as The Vultures collective and open the roads for solo careers.
Question 9.) How is it working with 6 other guys in a hip-hop group?
Ruler Why- At one time it was actually 7. It's too crazy, not everyone is fond of everyones style, so some people need to get cut. Too much politics. Thats why we only focused right now on the Core. Jus the Destroyer, Jamar Equality, Ruler Why = The Vultures

Question 1.) If you compare your earlier tracks such as: "The Red Pill", "Einstein Freestyle","Bars from Sumer", and "Political Science", one can notice the difference in style of these tracks when compared to your newer songs. Would you say you have transformed as an artist?
Prince Ea- Yeah, there has definitely been a transformation. There has been a progression, even though a minority of people think I have regressed. I have tripled my fan base, I have become more identifiable to a lot of people, and it also represents the growth of me, as a human-being. Music is a reflection of what you are going through. At the time of my earlier tracks I was young, and into politics, conspiracies and science. Now, I am still into those subjects, but now I tend to save those topics for when the time is right. Basically, when you hear my full body of work on my album, you will hear I have expanded. When you hear other songs like "Different Girl" and a song that is about to drop called, "Love of Me", you are still going to get the same emotion, and you are still going to get me, but it's a more grown up me. In some of my earlier works, a lot of things were sensational. A lot of things were not backed up by evidence, they were speculative. I still express my opinions on things, but I try not to do it in a way that misleads people, and makes people listen to me just because it is so outlandish or so far fetched from the truth. I still want to expose the truth in every bar and every verse, but now I tend to watch my mouth before I say something, so I don't mislead people. It is also strategy. If you are in the music industry, you have to have a strategy/plan. I want to gain as many fans as I can. I don't want to isolate people or marginalize any group of people. It is my intention to go mainstream. How people define mainstream is their opinion. I want to be popular, I want my message to get out there, and make smart cool to the masses. So after I do that and people hear my voice, they will be more open to listen to me when I start talking about things that I touched upon in my earlier songs.
Question 2.) How was working with Canibus on Paranoid Chillin?
Prince Ea- As far as working with Canibus, he is a legend. He is one of the biggest influences on me , so it was amazing to work with a guy and gain respect from someone who you grew up listening to everyday. I was so speechless. When the collaboration took place, I was really humbled.
Question 3.) What are your thoughts and feelings about the death of Osama Bin Laden? Some other underground rappers, such as Immortal Technique, have released their thoughts on the situation. How do you feel about this? And do you think it is important that more Americans understand the whole picture of the situation? Meaning the United States history in the middle east, and their history with Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden.
Prince Ea-I was saddened when people began to celebrate a mans death.Without understanding the geopolitical relevance of what happened, and to celebrate like others did on 9/11, is primitive. I have not had a chance to read Immortal Technique's piece, but I have heard a lot of good things about it. As far as the conspiracies about it, like that Bin Laden died in 2001 from kidney failure, and unmarked graves, I have done a lot of research about that. I just don't know, it's hard to trust the government. Discussing the after math of it, dumping the body in the ocean, and not releasing the photos because they were too gruesome, I can understand that. You don't want to create any type of anarchy or any chaos after you release the pictures. Now going on to Al-Qaeda, if Osama was captured or killed there will be a backlash. People don't understand the concept of blow back. As far as the reasons for 9/11, we don't understand the full picture, the full spectrum. We only see what they give us. I believe there is more hidden than was revealed. I'm still watching, trying to stay up on all mainstream and alternative information as I can, and hopefully come up with an opinion. It's hard to when you are fed propaganda from both sides.
Question 3.) What are your thoughts on the American Media? Do you think they construe information, sensationalize, and "sugar coat" things?
Prince Ea-Yeah man, of course. That's what the media does. They gotta get the ratings, he who controls the media, controls the masses. They have to keep the attention span of the people, so they sensationalize. We don't really have any unbiased news outlets in this country. The closet thing to it is maybe BBC News, but that's outside the country. But, wherever you turn on MSNBC, Fox-News, or if you get left wing propaganda, it's tough to believe anything. This country has a history of being lied to, in every situation. There are so many legitimate conspiracies, documented conspiracies, not only the ones they have not come out and said are conspiracies, but ones they have come out and said they are. It's frustrating.
Question 4.) What is the future for Prince Ea? A new album? Any new tracks? Videos? Tours?
Prince Ea-Yeah man, big things. I have to get the album done, I have been talking to a few labels, but I still want to keep it with the people. If the situation came up to do that, I would definitely consider it. I am actually just coming from a meeting with the Anthropology department at my school. I received many outstanding awards. It was humbling. I want to continue to popularize education, and keep pushing the movement. I have been blessed with many opportunities, so it is my duty to give back. I got a new album coming out, and a few collaborations with a few artists we discussed in this conversation. I've got something really incredible for the people coming out. I have also been talking to Immortal Technique about possibly doing an album or a song. I am trying to get him and other artists, such as Lowkey from the UK on the new album too. I'm just trying to popularize that notion of intelligence, and making it go mainstream. A lot of my fans think the mainstream is bad, but that's where every artist wants to go. If they can keep it organic, keep it truthful, without compromising who they are, their integrity and their message, and embrace it, then there's nothing to hate on.

The War against us all?
Wars are terrible reflections of humanity. Not only are people killed in wars, but so are dreams, hope, and love. War is a terrible thing that has plagued this world for thousands of years. The current wars in the middle east have effected the ENTIRE world. For example, in the US BILLIONS of dollars are spent during wars, when these BILLIONS of dollars could be used in the United States to support education, health care, and poverty. I do not believe in war, but I do believe in supporting our troops. The elites of this nation gain their oil, power, and money at the expense of our troops' lives, and the lives of people of the invaded countries, including children. The government say we are "fighting for freedom" and "democracy", but these are lies. They have used the media to dehumanize Muslims, and have coined their religion as "violent", which is false. Don't be confused by the media, we all must formulate our own opinions and ideologies. We must unite and live as one, or the future of this world will be dark. I posted a speech by Mumia abu-Jamal, a political prisoner in the United States. Immortal Technique and Dj Green Lantern added a beat to it. It is a very powerful speech, and discusses many of the topics I stated in this post.

RIP Bob Marley
30 years ago today, the world lost not only a legendary artist, but also a man of great character, love, peace, and faith. Bob Marley was born in Nine Mile, Jamaica, on February 6th, 1945. His mother was Jamaican and his father was English. Marley started playing music at a young age, and later formed the Wailers with Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith. They were originally called "The Teenagers" but later were known as "The Wailers". In 1966, some members left the Wailers, and only Bob, Peter, and Bunny remained. They continued to tour and make music together until 1974 when Bunny and Peter left the group. Bob continued to record music as "Bob Marley and The Wailers". In July 1977 Bob was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma, but continued to tour.Marley died on May 11, 1981. His last words to his son Ziggy Marley were "Money can't buy life". Elzhi, a Detroit native and former member of Slum Village, is a force to be reckoned with. In my opinion, he is one of the best artists out there, that no one knows. The ability to ride a beat, clever word play and lyrics, are important "weapons" in an hip-hop artist's arsenal, and Elzhi has all of these. Not only does he have all of these characteristics, but he also has passion and charisma. He left Slum Village in 2010, after recording 5 albums with them. As far as his solo career, Elzhi has released several albums and mix-tapes. He is also close friends with fellow Detroit rapper/producer, Black Milk. Show Elzhi some love and enjoy the track!

CIA drug trafficking?
Is the CIA trafficking drugs? Some sources claim that the CIA has been directly involved with drug trafficking operations. Other sources claim the CIA has had secret ties with groups that smuggle drugs, and allowed the drugs in the country. By letting the groups smuggle in the drugs, the CIA is provided with intelligence and material support. There have been many reports of the CIA being involved with with drug trafficking scandals in Mexico, Afghanistan, Haiti, Venezuela, Panama, and were reportedly involved in the Iran-contra affair. The song "Peruvian Cocaine" by Immortal Technique and other artists paints a clear picture of the theory of the CIA trafficking drugs. Each artist in the song represents a role in the operations. For example, Technique represents a worker in the fields, and raps from a workers perspective, and another artist raps from an drug lord's perspective, etc.

Police brutality
Police brutality is described as " the intentional use of excessive force, usually physical, but potentially also in the form of verbal attacks and psychological intimidation, by a police officer". Police brutality exists all over the globe and is a form of police misconduct. It is sad in this day of age, that the men and women who are supposed to "protect and serve the people", sometimes treat us like animals. The power gets to them, and they think they can do what ever they want. People have been killed, and seriously injured because of police brutality. I believe it is important that everyone is aware of police brutality, because it is another problem that plagues this world. When we all wake up and realize the corruption of the oppressive system, we can rise. The people must stand up for their rights and beliefs. When will the world wake up and realize "aren't we tired of violence, hate and war"? In the words of Bob Marley, "One love". I put a song into this post. The song is by Sabac Red and Immortal Technique. The title of the track is "Fight until the end" and it exposes the truth and horrors of police brutality. RIP to all the victims of police brutality.

Revolutionary hip-hop
Today in a world full of artists who are “puppets” of the major record-labels, underground hip-hop artists remain true to themselves, and their love of music. A huge genre of the underground is revolutionary hip-hop. These artists express their views and ideologies through their music, in hopes to expose the lies we have been told and for people to open their eyes to the truth. Some of my favorite artists include in this genre include: Immortal Technique, Sabac, Revolution of the Mind, Lowkey,Dead Prez, Prince ea, Diabolic, and Jedi Mind Tricks. Whenever I listen to a track by one of these artists, I can feel their passion for their music and their message radiating from the track. In a world where people conform and do as they told, these artists resist the pressure to sign to major record labels, which would possibly lead to them “selling out”. For example, Immortal Technique has been offered to be signed numerous times, but always turns down the contracts. He believes the industry screws the artists, tells them how to appear/act, and they do not earn very much for their hard work. Technique started his own record label, Viper Records, and has many artists signed. We can all learn from these artists, by what they stand for. They stand for: speaking your mind, not conforming under pressure, forming your own opinions/ideologies, standing up for your rights, and living life with an open mind.
